Hello and happy Monday! We’re officially in the countdown to Christmas over here… I got a good start on my Christmas shopping last Friday, I think that I’ll be breaking out some decorations today.

But, today also marks the first day of week 2 in Elle and Lindsay’s Elf for Health Challenge.

Elf 4 Health

In preparation for week 2, I’m going to recap how I did in the first week! My elf for the first two weeks is Clara from Southern Thintellect, who sent me some fun ideas and images to help get me in the spirit for the first week of the challenge. I did manage to complete every challenge the first week, so I’m off to a good start!

Monday: Meatless Monday.

As featured in my WIAW from last week, I managed this one quite well! I don’t do a lot of full-vegetarian days, but it’s something I definitely think I could do more often.

Snack Plate Lunch A fabulous, meatless snack plate-style lunch.

Tuesday: Unsubscribe from at least 3 email lists of catalogs you no longer want to receive.

Fortunately I do pretty well at minimizing email lists, but I found 3 that I didn’t want to receive – from a shoe store, from a magazine, and from an activist website. Less email to filter through every day!

Wednesday: Try a new workout.

I found a Wednesday workout class that I hadn’t tried yet – Yin Yoga! I usually go for hot/flow-style classes, so Yin was really different. In Yin, you’re holding poses for much longer than you would in a regular class; more than two minutes at a time. As opposed to stretching muscles, the focus is more on stretching connective tissues to improve flexibility and joints. This class had the deepest hip openers I’ve ever felt in my life – I felt awesome afterwards!

Thursday: Call someone to tell them you’re grateful for them.

My mom is an incredibly generous person, and is always willing to help me out when I need it. She recently offered to help us out with Atti’s latest vet bill, which we are very grateful for – he’s been an expensive pug this month! I made sure to call her and let her know how awesome she is on Thursday.

Atticus

Another week and a half of the cone to go…

Friday: Track your water intake.

I’m definitely the sort of person who takes a water bottle with me EVERYWHERE, so this wasn’t too much of a challenge for me. I was supposed to aim for about 65 ounces, and between water and tea I finished off with about 88 ounces. Not too bad!

Saturday: Treat yourself to something that you’ve been wanting.

The weekend before last, I was hit with a massive froyo craving…the same day that snow was falling in buckets and my city had more than 100 car accidents recorded in a single day. Needless to say, I wasn’t going to be leaving the house in that! But this last Saturday Eric and I were heading downtown for dinner and to check out the Christmas lights in the park, so we swung by Chil so I could FINALLY satisfy that damn craving.

Chil Froyo

And oh, satisfying it was. A mix of candy cane and cake batter froyo with chocolate mousse, chocolate chip cookie dough, Reese’s Pieces, Teddy Grahams, strawberry marshmallows, chocolate hazelnut sauce, sprinkles (of course!) and a pirouette cookie. Eaten while wandering around the park checking out Christmas lights – perfection.

Sunday: 100 Burpee Challenge

I also went to a TRX class yesterday, so I chose to break down the 100 burpees into 20-burpee intervals throughout the day. It got done, despite someone trying to distract me…

Atti and Burpees

I ended up doing ‘travelling burpees’ in an attempt not to land on the pug Wink

And now, onto week 2:

Challenges

Bring it on Wink

Have a good one!

<— Have you ever tried yin yoga?

<— How much water do you think you drink in a day?

<— What’s the last thing you’ve treated yourself to?

<— Feelings on burpees? I don’t love them, but they’re not my most hated workout move ever.

  1. You and I would be very good froyo friends, I’m sure. I haven’t been drinking nearly as much water as I should but I really do need to get back on the bandwagon. The cold turns me away from it. Yin yoga sounds really interesting- and painful

    • Haha we’ll have to make sure we get some froyo one day And it’s such a calm class, but it hurts more than any flow class I’ve ever taken!

  2. Lol, it looks like Atti might be feeling better, hey? TRX is so hard hey? I love it, but hate how expensive it is. The gyms here make you pay EXTRA to take their TRX classes.

I’m not sure how much water I drink? I drink to quench thirst & try not to overdo it otherwise I end up over-hydrated/headachey.

Last week, I treated myself to a few things that I’ve been craving – a couple of crazy good sushi rolls.. you know, the kinds with tempura in them, and drizzled with a bunch of sauce. YUM. Plus, I went to town on some coconut bliss ice cream yesterday. I think that’s it? This week, I think I’d like to get a Starbucks peppermint mocha at some point & maybe start on Christmas baking.

    • His energy is definitely back, but we’ve got another week and a half to go before the button and the cone come off. And I remember the last gym that I went to that offered it charged an arm and a leg for it, so I love that my current gym offers it as a regular class!
And oh goodness, coconut bliss. I haven’t had that stuff in ages!

  3. I love burpees! They are absolutely HORRIBLE but they’re so good for you. I usually break mine into 20s too. Great minds think alike!

  4. I ended up going over my goal for water intake too! I felt very hydrated, which was necessary because I am sick! I have to make up for my missed burpees today. I simply didn’t do them yesterday. Oops!

  5. Not gonna lie — the 100 burpees challenge sounds like it would be hell. I can do about 15 before I feel like I’m going to die, so I’d definitely be doing a lot of mini bursts throughout the day. And is it sad that I can’t think of the last thing I treated myself to? Since I swore off buying things before Christmas, it’s been kind of slow on the treat front, but I -have- been eating plenty of delicious foods, and we had a mini-Thanksgiving dinner for J last night, so I guess that kind of counts? I really do need to work on my water intake, though. I’m usually so good about it, but I’ve been slacking lately and I’m definitely notching the ill effects :?

    • One of the recommendations was that experienced burpee-ers could go for 100 in a row, and I was just like “yea….no.” 20 at a time was plenty for me! And I’m jealous that you and the boy did a Thanksgiving-y dinner…think it’ll still count if I do it next week?

  6. The 100 burpees may have thrown me off a bit;)
It’s funny that a year ago I could totally do that but now that I’m into pilates a lot more I’m not sure I could handle that many…now I’m curious.
Looks like the challenge has been good so far, kind of wishing I signed up now.

  7. Great job on completing all your challenges this week! They sound like some really good ones too! I’ve never tried yoga-yin. In fact, I’m not really even sure what it is. I need to start tracking my water intake during the day. I don’t think I drink nearly enough. I hate burpees!!! I do them because I know they’re really good for you, but I’m so not a fan. That challenge to do a 100 would definitely be a tough one for me.

  8. More than 100 car accidents recorded in a single day!?!?! That’s insane! That’s nice of your mother to help out with the vet bill; dogs can be so expensive. They’re worth it, though. And that froyo. Want. Now. Somehow I completely forgot that froyo existed while I was home and didn’t go once…guess that means I just need to eat more over winter break, huh?

    • definitely wasn’t a good day to be out driving! And definitely, even if he’s an expensive pug I still love him to death And lady, definitely get on a froyo trip!

  9. Oh yes, that FROYO!! So jealous!
I never did Yin Yoga but I heard good things about it.
I hate Burpees. I can’t do the jumps and the stand up move makes me feel like an old bag of potatoes. I try to avoid them whenever I can obviously

  10. The burpees were brutal, but I divided them up and did about 25 every 3 hours. Worked out pretty good!
Christine @ Gotta Eat Green recently posted..November Grocery Store FavouritesMy Profile

    • That’s a smart way to do it! I did 20 first thing in the morning and then another 20 when I got home from the gym, but then I forgot about them and ended up doing the last 3 sets about 20 minutes apart from other that night!

  11. I actually drink a ton of water every day… with the amount of running I do I just drink constantly … keeps me hydrated

Loved seeing the froyo picture- that is my favorite food indulgence!

    • definitely makes sense – whenever I go for a run I feel like my water bottle is permanently attached to my hand the rest of the day

  12. I have never even heard of yin yoga!! haha sounds cool though, it is always nice to try out new classes.

  13. I want to try yin yoga!

I actually drink way too much water. I went to the doc thinking I had a bladder problem because I was peeing every 10 mins and she was like uhhhh you should maybe consider cutting down on your water consumption. I know…wtf?!?!

    • Give it a shot sometime! Your hip flexors will be extremely thankful…and wow, I thought it was bad that I’m usually once an hour!

  14. Hahaha aw Atti…must be feeling better if he’s already getting in your way Looks like a successful week of elf health to me hun! I’ve never tried yin yoga, but it is offered by my second fav instructor at my yoga studio, so I might try it out sometime soon if I can make my schedule work! I always get nervous having to hold poses that long, but it will probably be good for me
Caitlin recently posted..Add It UpMy Profile

    • His energy is definitely back up, but we got another week and a half before the cone comes off! And I’d definitely give yin a shot, the poses that you hold are more like double-pigeon and runners lunge, so the poses themselves aren’t crazy difficult – it just really gets into the cartilage and joints!

  15. Hi Sam! New reader here and I think we’ll be awesome froyo buddies! They do it well where I’m from in Sydney.

Haven’t really tried yin yoga, perhaps I should!! Looking forward to more posts.

  16. I love your neon workout top! I wish I’d gotten into Elf 4 Health sooner because I thought it’d be all “do this workout” or “go sugar-less for a day”. I find those kinds of challenges triggering. But this actually looks quite fun! However the perfectionist in me can’t start it part-of-the-way in and be satisfied hahha so maybe next year.
Caitlin recently posted..Thanksgiving Eve With Nana C!My Profile

    • I was a little concerned about that too, but looking at the list of challenges they posted beforehand it’s clear that they take social and emotional aspects into consideration as well, so it’s not all exercise and diet! And if there was a challenge to go sugar-free for a day…I sincerely doubt I would do it

  17. We used to do burpees in P.E. class in middle school. They were awful, haha. But what a workout. I didn’t have as far to go to the ground back then though.

  18. Great job on sticking to the challenge- I used to be so on point with drinking water but recently…not so much. Although I could blame Winter!

Seriously, I admire people who can put a million toppings on top of their froyo- I’d go palate crazy! And I lol’d at the pirouette cookie. Sounds like ballet.

  20. I’ve never heard of Yin yoga but it sounds like a nice challenge. I have been craving hot yoga like crazy but I’m too cheap to buy a few passes.

Glad to hear Atti is feeling up to interrupting your burpees! Hopefully he doesn’t have anymore expensive vet bills and heals up fast!

    • It was definitely interesting – worth trying at least once! And he definitely seems to be acting like himself again, just have to wait another week and a half to get the button and the cone off!

  21. Yin yoga sounds awesome! Sometimes when I’m in a yoga class I feel so good in certain poses and I wish the instructor would hold them longer, so yin yoga sounds like it would be perfect for that.

100 burpees sounds like torture! I hate doing even like 5 of them lol.

  22. Oh wow, you knocked last week out of the park…with that froyo cup alone! Chocolate mousse? Strawberry marshmallows? CHOCOLATE HAZELNUT SAUCE?!!? Why oh why do our shops not serve stuff like that?! <- says the lactose-challenged girl who has pretty much given up on ever being able to enjoy pain-free froyo again! Womp…WOMP!

And way to go on the burpees! I loathe them with every inch of my being and have no problem whatsoever using my gimp leg as an excuse not to do them at the current moment!

That yin yoga sounds amazing! I've never done anything besides vinyasa before, but man, I could really use some good hip opening right now. And THAT is what she said, my friend! BAM!

Well done on doing so well on week 1! I try and track my water and probably drink about 7 glasses a day on average.
