Hello there! Happy Friday!

Five Things Friday

Of course, that’s Five Things Friday around here. Shall we get right into it?

Five Things I’ve Eaten Lately:

1. Waffles with Greek yogurt and bacon. Waffles Waffles dipped in sweetened Greek yogurt. Try it sometime.

2. Tuna melts on toast.

Tuna Melt With a side of pug paw.

3. Steak, baked sweet potato, and dressing on spinach.

Steak Salad Mmm…steak. Definitely one of my favourite red meats (I think bison would win overall though).

4. Banana protein pancake with cashew butter.

Protein pancake Does anyone else find that the texture of cashew butter is weird? I mean, I like the flavour, but it’s almost…gluey?

5. Pulled pork with roasted broccoli and buttered toast.

Pulled Pork I had every intention of making Irish Soda bread…but then I realized I didn’t have buttermilk. So I’ll be baking that today, I think.

5 Things Happening Lately:

1. I’m officially past the halfway mark on Rosetta Stone! For those of you who don’t know, I’m using the Rosetta Stone program to learn French – it makes sense, considering that French is the second language here. I’m still nowhere near fluent, but I feel like I’m slowly getting there. My goal is to finish the program feeling like I have conversational-level French, which I think it’ll do for me. Once I’m done, the test will be to put on a French film and see how well I’m able to follow along Wink

2. I’m in a bit of a Disney/kid’s movie phase right now. Last weekend I watched Tangled, the weekend before that was Frozen…this weekend, I think it’ll be Princess and the Frog or Monsters University. Maybe knowing that graduation (and therefore, unavoidable adulthood) is looming is causing me to regress to childhood? Whatever…they have good movies.

3. Weird wives-tale-sounding-thing that actually works: So, the pug gets eye crusties (you know, the goopy stuff in the corner of your eyes?) pretty regularly, especially in the morning. A few weeks ago, Eric’s mom told us that a dog breeder friend of hers swears that giving a dog distilled water will get rid of that almost completely. This week, instead of filling up Atti’s water dish at the sink I’ve been pouring water from the Brita filter into his bowl. And – it worked. He very rarely has the eye crusties at all anymore. Craziness.

Atticus Another shot from his birthday…he is clearly counting down the seconds until I tell him it’s ok to eat the cupcake.

4. Speaking of the pug…when we went to the dog park on Sunday, I was a little worried that I was seeing double.

Pugs Can you figure out which one is mine? The other pug was named Dallas – when they were close together it was easier to tell them apart because Atticus is an apricot fawn while Dallas is a regular one. Fun fact: pugs actually come in four colours (as opposed to the two colours people usually associate them with): black, fawn, silver fawn, and apricot fawn.

(can you tell I did my research when we got a pug?)

P.S. Atti’s on the right Wink

5. Google+. Does anybody use it? Should I be using it? Can someone tell me exactly what I should be doing with it?

5 Things I Pinned This Week:

1. Seriously this is good advice.

Couldn’t find the original source – sorry!

2. Semisweet Chocolate Avocado Mousse via Nutty for Life.

Chocolate Avocado Mousse

I haven’t tried the avocado-as-dessert thing yet, but this will be the first one I  try. It sounds so good!

3.  This shirt via

I Hope Your Day is as Nice as My Butt.

Because if that were the case, you’d be having a really nice day…Tongue Out

4. Double Chocolate Banana Bread from Ari’s Menu.

Double Chocolate

Can everything I eat be double chocolate?

5. Oh Splat! nail polish via KB Shimmer.

Oh Splat Nail Polish

I love all the colours in this! Looks very speckled-egg like, so perfect for Easter.

But that is it for me – have a fabulous weekend!

<— What colour are your nails right now?

<— Best thing you ate this week?

<— Have you used avocado in a dessert/sweet snack before?

<— Last Disney/kid’s movie you watched?

* Due to some issues with location, I’ve had to announce a new winner for the North Coast Naturals Giveaway – Mariah J. Mariah, I have sent you an email! If I don’t hear back, I will announce a new winner Monday.

  1. Wow those waffles are beautiful. I love to have them for dinner but they never make it off the iron looking so golden and perfectly… waffled. (What a great word: noun, and verb, and you can force it into an adjective. And then the phrase “waffling on,” which is what I’m doing right now with this ramble…) I’m impressed with your griddling skills. (Not sure that’s usually a verb, but I guess it’s an interesting morning for language over here.)

Speaking of language, how do you like learning from Rosetta Stone? I’m tempted to try it, as they have an Irish Gaelic programme, but it’s so bloody expensive and I have heard very mixed reviews. Do you find that you’re able to sort of think in French after using it for a while? Would love to hear about your progress as you go further.

“Apricot fawn” is such a cute way to classify pug colors!

    • Haha so many uses of ‘waffle’ :-p And I do like Rosetta Stone! I don’t think I’m at the point yet where I can unconsciously think in french, but I’ve starting to pick up conversations when I overhear them or read something in French. I think it’s awesome for what it is – it can’t replace an actual classroom or teacher, but as another option, it’s pretty good.
  2. I was going to say that Atti was on the right because his legs look longer… And he’s mooning us, which is totally like him

Nails right now…. Bright Lights Big Colour by OPI. I picked it up in the airport on my way to Hawaii and it’s basically the perfect spring shade. As for last DISNEY movie… I think it was Frozen… Which is also coming out on DVD soon… Which means I have to add it to my collection

  3. There are so many things that I love about this post, Sam! First of all, that fingernail polish is so fun! Secondly, another happy birthday to Atti Third, I’ve seen waffles all over the blogosphere today! Kyle mentioned us having a “hearty” breakfast tomorrow before celebrating St. Pat’s (haha!) so waffles might have to be on the menu

    • I think it’s an online company? I had never heard of them before either. And ok – will watch that movie this weekend
  8. I’m so jealous of your food this week! Waffles, pulled pork, and tuna melts?! Those are three of my top…. 20? Haha I have a lot of favorite foods. Cashews are my favorite nuts, but cashew butter weirds me out too. It has a strange texture- you’re right! Bummer. Happy Friday!

  9. Waffles and sweetened Greek yogurt!?! I totally have to try that! Sounds like a wonderful combination.

Oh my gosh, I absolutely love that nail color! It’s definitely spring and Easter-like! I’ve been lazy about doing my nails lately, so they are sporting the natural look at the moment.

    Have a great weekend Sam!
Holly @ EatGreatBEGreat recently posted..A Brief BreakMy Profile

    • I couldn’t even tell you the last time I painted my nails, but apparently the idea that spring isn’t too far off is inspiring me you have a great one too lady!
  10. Awww, the pug and the cupcake!! My favorite!!
Though the waffles look amazing too and make me again want to buy a waffle iron.
My nails are bright red – my mom bought a shellac set and is doing them now for me regularly. It is perfect for me, cause I am a sucker with nails – they usually look like the ones from a 12 years old child.
    Happy Weekend Sam!!

  11. LOVE that nail polish! And I’ve been wondering that about google+ too…I have no idea how it works. There’s too much social media these days…
Beth @ Mangoes and Miles recently posted..It’s Been A Year Already?!My Profile
    • ohmygod yes. I want to figure it out, but part of me really doesn’t want another social media outlet that I need to update on a regular basis…
  12. Love the things you pinned, especially the mousse and nails!

Hope all is well love, and I am wishing you a happy weekend!

Best thing I ate lately, angies frosted cupcake kettle corn!

  13. Those tuna melts on toast look so good! May need to think about doing something like that for my lunches. Also, thanks for the tip about the distilled water. Cookie doesn’t get crusties, but more like eye boogers. That’s an awesome nail polish!!!
Jessica @ pugrunaholic recently posted..Learning CompromisesMy Profile
  14. I’m definitely going to try the waffle/yogurt combo. So fun! I find cashew butter to have a bit of an alcohol taste… it’s so strange.

I like putting avocado into smoothies, and chocolate avo pudding is one of my fav healthly desserts! I usually sweeten it with dates. Last year, for my birthday I had a raw chocolate avocado cake with a date/hemp/chocolate crust.
Jo @ Living Mint Green recently posted..Recipe: Super Green Tropical SmoothieMy Profile

    • I haven’t tried the avocado in a smoothie thing yet – does it add a lot of flavour? And ohmygod, wanna send that my way for my birthday?
  15. I have a google+ account and I have no idea what to do with it either. I also don’t feel like doing any research. So….if when you figure it out you could do a blog post so I don’t have to do the research…I’d really appreciate it. Or you don’t have to…I haven’t used it yet…why start now. :]
  16. Use a tablespoon of white vinegar for every cup of regular to sub for buttermilk
    • That’s usually what I end up doing, but all I had at home was almond milk and I didn’t know if it would have the same effect!
  17. I often use avocado in sweet recipes. I yet didn’t try to do a chocolate pudding, but once I made bars… They were great! Oily and any smack of avocado – only chocolate.
Marina @ Lazy for Diet recently posted..#WIAW PARTYMy Profile
  18. Atti and his ‘twin’ are so cute! I had no idea about the eye crusties, I’m going to have to try that with Bentley. I love sweet potato with salad, it’s pretty muh always my lunch.
Nicole @ FruitnFitness recently posted..Tropical Green Banana BreadMy Profile
  19. Okay cashew butter….I love cashews but prefer them as nuts over nut butter. Almonds- better as nut butter over the actual nut. Strange.

The minute avocado prices go down, I’m making Christine’s avocado truffles. Why have an avocado shortage here argh! My nails are hot pink right now.

  20. Happy Friday! Now I want waffles.
  21. I absolutely love Disney movies! (and roasted broccoli) One flaw in the older Disney movies is the princesses always end up full out sobbing dramatically.
Liz @ Carpe Diem and Run recently posted..Why I Stopped Counting CaloriesMy Profile
    • haha that is true. Have you seen Frozen yet? I feel like they did a pretty good job of breaking their typical ‘princess saved by the prince’ model.
  22. Oh Splat! is gorgeously quirky.. love it! I also love to rock the naked nail look apparently.
I keep putting off trying out avo in a chocolate mousse..oh and there’s a recipe that uses avo in a chocolate pie that sounds great but somehow something just deters me from actually making it. The only sweet element I’ve had with the green beauties is in a toasted sandwich with berry jam and cottage cheese.
Disney movies are the bomb. Tangled is hands down my favorite…along with Bambi…and The fox and the hound.. ehhh I should stop already.

  23. I haven’t watched a Disney movie in forever! I’ve been meaning to see all those ones you listed though. Can someone just give me more hours in the day!?!

I baked banana bread with avocado in it once years ago and it was pretty good. And these days I occasionally put it in smoothies. I’ve been meaning to experiment with it more though in mousse and raw desserts!
Chelsea @ Chelsea’s Healthy Kitchen recently posted..Leek and potato soupMy Profile

  24. I have to try the eye crusties trick on my chihuahua. That stuff gets nasty! And that nail polish looks like candy! Love it. The best thing I ate this week was my homemade ribs… it was my first time making them and it was a huge hit!
