So, why didn’t anyone tell me that making homemade nut butter is actually pretty easy? I feel like I’ve stumbled onto a secret that could kind of change my life.

But seriously, bloggers and nut butter. We’re pretty obsessed, aren’t we? Remember when all you could find in grocery stores was Kraft peanut butter? And now, the list is never ending. My personal nut/coconut butter stash at the moment:

  • this homemade honey vanilla peanut butter
  • coconut butter
  • chocolate coconut butter
  • cashew butter

And currently in the mail on it’s way too me:

  • PB & Co Cinnamon Raisin Swirl
  • Barney Butter Crunchy Almond
  • Justin’s Chocolate Hazelnut

Yup…just maybe a little obsessed. And of course, now that I know I can make it at home in my Ninja Ultima…this is going to be a pretty regular occurrence. As much as I like experimenting with almond butter, cashew butter, coconut butter, and all that jazz….peanut butter will always have my heart. So of course, that was the first kind of homemade nut butter I wanted to make (giggle…nut butter).

And because if I’m going to have smooth peanut butter I want it really freakin’ smooth, I added in some coconut butter, which was perfect – added a bit of moisture without adding a lot of flavour. And when can you go wrong with either honey or vanilla?

Honey Vanilla Peanut Butter | Better With Sprinkles

  • 1 3/4 cup lightly salted roasted peanuts *
  • 1-2 tablespoons coconut oil, melted (2 tablespoons if you prefer a smoother texture)
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla

If you use unsalted peanuts, I would suggest adding about 1/4 teaspoon salt to recipe.

Honey Vanilla Peanut Butter | Better With Sprinkles

1. Add nuts to blender. Set to about a three and blend, gradually raising the power to a 6-7 until the nuts are finely ground.

2. Add honey, coconut oil and vanilla.  Pulse five times. Continue blending until incorporated.

Makes just over 1 cup of peanut butter.

Have a great day! (and hopefully, you’re not feeling too hungover this morning…)

<— Favourite kind of nut butter?

<— What nut butters do you have on hand right now?

  1. I have homemade roasted cinnamon almond butter (made with my Ninja Ultima!), TJ’s creamy unsalted almond butter, Barney Butter Coco Coconut Almond Butter, Sunflower Seed Butter, and raw coconut butter in my stash at the moment! I am in dire need of picking up some of my favorite Wild Friends Cinnamon Raisin PB though this weekend

  2. Salt. I can’t believe you even asked that. Confession- I always add sea salt to my nut butters whenever I eat it.

PS why don’t you make but butter? Pretty sure you proclaimed that on my blog!

The best one I made was cacao coconut. Crack in a jar!

  8. STOP. I tried to make my own nut butter a few weeks ago but my food processor isn’t good enough…like at all. It was a sad, sad reality. I’m glad you are part of the make-your-own-nut-butter club though! I can only hope to become a member some day.

  9. Adding coconut oil is such a great idea! I’m 110% sure my magic bullet wouldn’t be able to handle whole nuts, but I wonder if I could use almond/peanut four. Hmmm….

  10. Confession: I have a jar of kraft natural PB that’s actually pretty tasty, and I think I can taste mould in it, but I’m still eating it. Hahahahaha

That’s it for nut butters! Almond butter is $15-20 a jar here! OMG

  11. I am so lazy when it comes to stuff like this, that I would never bother making my own. Come to think of it, I haven’t had any nut butter whatsoever this entire year!

  12. I think I need to come and raid your stash . Oy I didn’t know nut butter could be made in a blender.. I assumed that was a job for a food processor. Either way I have a long lost memory at attempting almond butter and conking out my mini -weak- food processor.
Situated where I am I have never tasted any kind of flavored nut butter. The ones I’ve seen around here are pumped full of nasties!
I currently have 2 jars of Crunchy Peanut butter and 1 smooth. Yeah you’d think I’m some peanut freak… uhh maybe I am. I love Macadamia nut butter as much as PB but we seem to be in a macadamia drought as of about 4 weeks now
  13. While I don’t necessarily share in your love of peanut butter, I’m kind of crazy for my AB. It’s definitely one of the foods that I always have to have on hand, and in most cases I end up having WAY more than I comfortably need. Let’s see… right now I have Justin’s classic and honey AB, Maisie Jane’s roasted AB, Barney Butter, Barney cocoa AB, coconut butter, sunflower seed butter, soy nut butter, aaaaaand… I feel like I’m missing one. But yeah, you get the idea

  14. I considered making my own nut butter last summer. But then I decided that I was too lazy to (1) wait for them to get ground up and (2) clean out the blender afterwards, so I took a trip to Whole Foods and bought multiple jars of nut butters instead.

  15. Omg want to make this nut butter right now !! Looks so good. And yes I think the HLB community is obsessed with nut butters so many different kinds and flavors out there!!! I really want to try coconut butter I hear its really good.. also any idea what the difference is between the Ninja Ultima and Ninja professional blender? I am in the market and was not sure what the difference was here !? Maybe its a little smaller who knows

  16. This looks like a delicious combination of flavors! I love adding salt to my nut butters I make at home. I always have my maple almond butter (homemade) on hand, but I also have: smooth Barney Almond Butter, Vanilla Justin’s Almond Butter, Sprout’s crunchy natural Peanut Butter (x2 because my boyfriend loves it), and probably more stuffed in my desk at work

  17. Mmmmm….nut butter! My favorite is peanut butter. I have yet to make it myself yet though. I don’t think my current food processor is powerful enough to make some. So one of these days when I get a new one, I definitely need to try. Looks delicious!

  18. YUM! My favorite nut butter ( well one of many, haha ) is Justin’s Vanilla almond butter, so very similar!

  20. Yum! I love the idea of honey and vanilla to peanut butter!

It’s funny; I am obsessed with Justin’s vanilla almond butter and tried to recreate it. Well, let me you tell you, making almond butter at home is a bitch! It took FOREVER. And then it wasn’t as good as Justin’s because they use sugar. Darn it.

  21. Is it weird that I get crazy amounts of anxiety when I make nut butter? Seriously – I get all nervous that I’m going to hurt my vita-mix… as if it has feelings or something. I treat the thing like my second child haha. Just send me to the loony bin.
  22. Isn’t making nut butter fun!? The possibilities are ENDLESS!

  23. It is incredibly dangerous that I just read this post. I’m nuts about nut butters probably more than you. I just had a case of my favorite brand shipped to my house. But now that I know I can make my own….I’m going to be testing this out. Totally dangerous for me! I eat nut butter like it’s going obsolete.
  24. Mmm this looks delicious, and I bet it would be good with almonds too! I’ve never had a flavoured almond butter before and I’ve always been curious about trying them.

My favourite nut butter is hands down Barney Butter! And oh man, you don’t even want to know what I have on hand right now… 4 jars of Barney Butter, soy nut butter, sunflower seed butter x 2, coconut butter, cinnamon soy nut butter, sunflower pepita butter, and tahini. Yeah, I kind of have a problem.

  28. You can make it in a food processor too! I’ve never had a good blender like that so I can’t say how it compares but super easy- if you’re ever in a pinch

This looks amazing! It reminds me a little of this earth balance peanut butter that has coconut oil in it. Swoon. And you added honey, so this is pretty much the best PB out there!

    • My food processor is a mini, $15 President’s Choice model, I’m pretty sure it would explode before it made peanut butter and I’ve been meaning to but that Earth Balance one – it sounds awesome!
