So it’s been forever and a half, but I’m linking up to Becky‘s Treat Yourself Tuesday today!

Treat Yourself Tuesday

So I currently live a little less than an hour and a half from the Canadian/US border at Port Huron, Michigan. So it’s a pretty popular thing for people around here to take a day or a weekend to go shopping in the States. My mom and I used to do it all the time when I was younger – I’m pretty sure that all of my semi-formal dresses in high school plus my prom dress came from the States. It was the easiest way to make sure I wasn’t going to end up with the same dress as someone else! Because, we all know that was so devastating in high school ;)

We hadn’t been for a looong time, so we made plans to drive down this past Saturday for a day of shopping at Great Lakes Crossing Outlet Mall in Auburn Hills.

DSCF3621 I desperately needed summer clothes after my weight gain, so this was a good place to go. Outlet sales combined with Memorial Day sales = win.

Maxi Skirt I’m officially 100% on the maxi skirt bandwagon – I bought this one!

I also wanted a dress for the cocktail hour and dinner the Friday night of Blend (eep! Just over a week!). I typically lean towards ‘little black dress’ types, but I went a bit out of the box this time around.

Dress NOT the dress I chose, but that gives you a pretty good idea of the types that I was looking at!

Of course, I can’t go to the US and not go food shopping.

Trader Joes

Once we finished at the mall, I insisted we head to the Trader Joe’s one town over. I was not disappointed, to say the least. We finished up our trip with a visit to Target for a few essentials and more food.

Overall, I got a good selection of stuff!

The clothes:

Clothes

  • a cami and dress (Charlotte Russe)
  • workout capris, shorts and a top (TJ Maxx)
  • shorts and a maxi skirt (New York & Company)
  • two tanks, a pair of shorts, and a pair of jeggings (Forever 21 – I think it’s like Target – I always have better luck at the US locations)
  • gladiator sandals (Target)
  • plus some less exciting stuff – makeup and bedsheets from Target, a new nose ring from a random kiosk in the mall

Trader Joe's

The Trader Joe’s haul:

  • cheese puffs (I definitely wrote ‘cheese pugs’ there…)
  • guacamole hummus
  • soyaki sauce
  • crunchy cookie butter
  • cocoa almond spread
  • Greek yogurt
  • dark chocolate honey mints (of course, those are open already…)
  • fig butter
  • body butter
  • unpictured: almond meal and chocolate chips

So basically, I bought everything that Ang told me too And I really wanted coconut chips, but they were out!!! Slightly devastating.

Target Groceries

The rest of the food:

  • Cascadian farms Cinnamon Crunch
  • various Chobanis
  • Kodiak Cakes
  • Ben & Jerry’s – Hazed & Confused Core (I am so excited to eat this. You have no idea) and Half Baked Froyo
  • Cherry Coke Zero (so bad for me. so don’t care- it’s my favourite next to Vanilla Coke Zero)
  • Quest bars in Cookies n Cream and Peanut Butter Cups
  • Justin’s Vanilla Almond Butter (I should have bought more than one…so good).

So basically, there was a lot of treating myself on Saturday Obviously, I love having the fun groceries, but I’m excited to have shorts that I don’t have to squish myself into and shirts that are a bit more flattering on my body type! It’s definitely a huge confidence and self esteem booster to have clothes that actually fit the way they should.

Have a good one!

  1. Nice you were in my neck of the woods…I live in Michigan near the Somerset Mall area, which isn’t too far from that area!!!

Great lakes crossing is definitely a great outlet mall though!!!

And it looks like you got some GREAT stuff from Trader Joe’s – seriously love that place. I’ve never had their fig butter though…I’m going to have to try it next time I go.

I have not been doing a lot of shopping lately, but I am in serious need of a wardrobe update! But I totally agree on the maxi dress and skirt thing – totally cute!

    Have a great week!

    • It’s really good – It has a ton of flavour. And I will definitely want to go back to that mall, it was great – cool that I was out near you!

  2. Can I just say smart it is you went BEFORE blend because now- you can stock up again when your there after taste testing everything!

Vanilla coke zero > cherry coke zero.

    Actually, no, Diet Mt.Dew.

    • haha that’s the plan! And I needed the ice cream because I can’t really bring that back on a plane. And Diet Mt. Dew is less exciting because I can find that around here…but thanks for spurring a new craving :-p

  3. well girl, if you’ve gained weight then it was definitely weight you needed to gain because you look amazing! sad that you didn’t choose the salmon pink dress, I love that color

  4. Oh I am SO jealous that you can go shopping in the US!! I think I would end up every weekend there
Love the skirt and also the dress – beautiful lady!!!

  7. Now that’s a successful shopping trip, love that peplum dress on you! So jealous of that TJs loot…especially the Ben & Jerry stash! Can’t wait to try the core flavours whil I’m in London! Is there a Zara in Cabada? A majority of my clothes are from there- love it!

    • I wasn’t sure what I would think of the style, but I did like it! I just found a couple I liked a little bit better though And I think Zara’s here, but not anywhere near me, unfortunately!

  8. That pink dress is gorgeous! Though not as stunning as you, seriously girl you look amazing! I’m looking forward to going shopping when I’ve gained a bit too and my weight stabilises, congrats on becoming healthy and an amazing shopping trip
Victoria recently posted..Caught Up In The Smiles Of Yesteryear…My Profile

    • Aww, thanks Victoria! I’m still not sure if my weight will go up or down or stay the same, so I bought more elastic-y and stretchy stuff, just in case.

  9. Heck yes to treating yourself. LOVE the outfits, you look amazing! Trader joes is always soooo crowded, but so worth it.

  12. YESSSSSSS YOU BOUGHT COOKIE BUTTER!!!!! That made me so happy haha it’s seriously the greatest thing you’ll ever eat. I love the maxi skirt you got! I remember when I first had to gain weight and my mom and I went shopping- it was fun in some ways but really difficult in others. It’s a lot better than trying to squeeze into old clothes though and you really made out with some cute stuff
    Sarah @pickyrunner recently posted..BelongingMy Profile

    • hahaha I knew you’d love that :-p And it was a bit trying at times – especially when I would find variance in how sizes fit in the same store! (Forever 21, I’m looking at you…)

  13. Is it sad that what caught my attention the most was the Cascadian Farms cereal and the Justin’s AB? Clearly I have my priorities straight. But I know what you mean about it feeling freaking awesome to have clothes that fit. I need to get around to getting my butt into a mall to do some shopping, especially since I need a dress to Blend big time. Also… it’s basically like a week away :D

  14. Well, it looks like you most definitely had a successful shopping trip! I absolutely love that maxi skirt! I went to Target over the weekend in search of a maternity maxi skirt, but couldn’t find anything that fit just right. I haven’t given up yet though! I did end up buying a pair of leggings, tank top and dress, so it wasn’t a total waste.

I haven’t been American outlet shopping in way too long. I usually do Buffalo.. but the absolute best is in Florida!

    • Thank you Rose! And I want to make it out to Buffalo for a shopping trip sometime – it’s a little further away but I think it’d be worth it.

  17. Love Trader Joe’s… and Target. That’s where my most-recent clothing purchase was made, which included a couple maternity tanks. So comfy and actually pretty cute I’m dying for a massage, so that’ll most likely be my next splurge.

  18. The last thing I bought myself was a maxi skirt, too! I treated myself to a hair cut and a relaxing day off work and not doing housework the other day. It felt great. So glad you had a great Memorial Day weekend.

  19. I am so glad to see that you bought some Justin’s vanilla AB!! That stuff is the shit! And yes… you probably should have bought an entire case

Last item of clothing I bought was some denim shorts for the summer- was so pleased to find ones that looked good – a crossfit body ain’t build like a normal body!!

I guess I should consider myself lucky to live close to a Target, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, pretty much every other major store in the US . . . now if only I had the budget to shop at those places regularly!

  23. I like maxi skirts! Wish I could wear maxi dresses though but I’m too short!

I got the Trader Joe’s mix of cookie butter and cocoa almond spread < have you tried it?

And the Kodiak cakes are fantastic! Can't believe it took me so long to try it!

    • I saw that one and was trying to decide between it and the crunchy cookie butter…decided on the crunchy! Next time though

  24. Two maxi dresses they’re the theme of my summer! Love them and how cute and comfy they are! That skirt is gorgeous and that dress looks amazing on you! Can’t wait to see the one you picked! I fully approve of all the tjs finds, too….love that cookie butter! Need to try the cocoa spread next

  25. Hahaha I LOVE that I influenced your TJ’s trip
If the dress you did pick looks anything like that pink one, I’m sure it’s amazing! And of course looks great. I wish I were going to blend to see it, but I guess I’ll have to wait for the recaps
Ang @ Nutty for Life recently posted..Fitness Bucket ListMy Profile

    • haha thanks for all the fantastic recommendations! And I’m sad that you’re not going too but I promise lots of pictures!

  26. Yayy shopping! You should have taken me with ;)..I’m always up for a devoted shopping trip. Love the striped maxi! Looks like such a fabulous comfy material. And girl. You look drop-dead in that pink hue..are you fan of the peplum cut? I always admire it on others; yet don’t feel too awesome in it myself.
Gahhhh I want the cookie butter! And Justins! And the cocoa almond spread! Dang SA needs to wake up in that department :-p .
    Ms.J recently posted..Deja VuMy Profile

    • haha I’ll bring you next time! And I liked it more than I thought it would! I have another dress that’s a bit peplum-ish, but that was the first time I’ve tried something in the full style.

  27. I love maxis but I’m petite so I can’t really pull them off! I’ve found that high-lo skirts and dresses work a lot better and they still have a similar look.

I scored some Memorial Day deals too — a scarf and a purse from ALDO and a sports bra and shorts bought online from Hollister. But I’m totally jealous of your TJs haul! I haven’t been there since I moved in April and there’s no Trader Joes anywhere near here so I’m going to beg my mom to bring me some fun food when she visits in July!
Ashley recently posted..Getting Healthy: One YearMy Profile

    • high lo skirts are awesome! I’ve got one tucked away somewhere. And definitely sounds like some good deals!

  28. Love all your purchases – especially the maxi skirt. I keep forgetting I have a closet full of maxi dresses & skirts but I keep opting for no pants + compression socks when I’m hanging out around the house instead.

  29. How fun!!! I LOVE the maxi skirt… I am totally on that bandwagon right now too. In fact, I am having all of my models wear them for the next TBV Apparel photoshoot I am doing next week. And jealous that you’re going to the Blend retreat! Gonna be a blast. Xo

    • haha I stopped shopping because I ran out of the money I brought and didn’t want to move onto the credit card!

  31. Sounds like such an awesome day! There’s nothing I love more than clothes and food shopping in the US.

The last item of clothing I bought was uhhh I can’t even remember. I don’t think it was even that long ago! My favourite clothing stores are Aritzia, J Crew, and Dynamite. Oh I think it was a top from Dynamite that was the last item of clothing I bought! Haha.

That’s too bad about the coconut chips being out! Drats! I think that means we need to make that blogger road trip to Buffalo that we were planning last fall!

    • Ohh, Dynamite is a good one! I don’t think I’ve ever been in a J. Crew, but from what I’ve seen they have cute stuff. And I would absolutely be down for that!
