Gotta love the alliteration there.

How was everyone’s weekend? We managed to get the perfect weather all weekend long – around 25 (77) and lots of sun. Of course, I tried to spend a lot of time outside to enjoy it!

So, my quick weekend recap:

  • Drinks on the Shoeless Joe‘s Patio with the bestie and her boyfriend Friday night.

Margarita A Cancun Margarita (tequila, Triple Sec, citrus and strawberry juices on the rocks) made me happy. Laura, let’s make this a regular thing this summer, mmmk?

  • The first Shaken Iced Tea of the season while running errands on Saturday:

Starbucks If you’ve been reading me for a while you that I can’t do anything related to coffee, but I do love my Starbucks iced teas in the summer. Although, maybe I’d like iced coffee better than regular coffee? I might have to test this theory sometime…

  • My foray into pretending that I have a green thumb:

Herbs

My dad is an avid gardener, but my only experience with it is:

1. Telling my dad what to plant (like the one year I asked him to plant eggplant and we ended up with like 40 of them. That was also the year I discovered that I don’t like eggplant…)

2. Eating (most of) what he grew. Basically, after I left home, any visits back in the summer ended with me taking a pile of tomatoes with me when I left.

So basically, I have no idea what I’m doing and this should be interesting. I’ve got: mint, cilantro, rosemary, and purple basil. Fingers crossed I don’t kill it all right away!

  • Saturday night sushi date.

sushi As per usual, Eric and I went for All You Can Eat (at 168 Sushi, our current favourite sushi place ) and ate so much that neither of us needed to eat for approximately 16 hours afterwards. Sushi, you are delicious.

Also, this is what sushi on a Pringle looks like:

Sushi chip ‘salmon chip’ was a legit thing on the menu so I had to see it for myself. It was basically a mini sashimi taco.

Our favourite dessert when we get sushi:

tempura ice cream We each get vanilla ice cream and add tempura banana. Perfect combo of hot and cold, creamy and crispy – I could probably eat this dessert every day and I wouldn’t even miss chocolate (that’s a lie).

  • Enjoying the gorgeous weather on Sunday:

Reading Outside Reading outside on the balcony with a little furry company – the perfect way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon.

First with a trip to the dog park, then hanging outside on the balcony with a book – so relaxing.

  • My momma’s birthday surprise:

Varekai (img source)

Tickets to see Cirque du Soleil! I bought these tickets in December when they first went on sale with the intent of surprising my mom on her birthday, and frankly, I’m just proud of myself for being able to keep the secret this long. I told her to be at my apartment at a certain time, then we hopped in her car and drove downtown. After we got out, I handed her her birthday card…with the tickets tucked inside and 15 minutes until the show started. SURPRISE!

Cirque du Soleil She told me that she didn’t see that coming at all, so I’m just happy with myself that I managed to pull off the surprise –  it was killing me a little keeping it a secret for so long.

But it was an amazing show! I’ve never seen Cirque du Soleil and my Mom had only seen one other one a few years back, but we both agreed that this show was fantastic. The insane amount of skill, flexibility, agility and strength that goes into these performances is astounding, to say the least.

(and I meant to get a picture of the two of us and I didn’t. Fail).

Overall, definitely a fabulous weekend! And now, I’m into the three day countdown until I head to Utah for Blend. Eep!

 Have a great Monday!

  1. I have a black thumb. No wait, charcoal thumb. I look at a plant and it dies. Literally.

The fact that you have basil though…..hello homemade pesto! Made an amazing batch the other day!

I swear Canada is the only place I have come across all you can eat sushi outside of a generic buffet. I think I will make a night out of it there and suffer the prospective 16 hour food baby.

    • I’ve never made pesto at home before, so I definitely want to try! It’ll look cool with the purple basil, too. And now I don’t think I want to leave my country….I love my AYCE sushi.

  2. I want a garden!! but I also know nothing about gardening. Give iced coffee a try and tell me what you think (I hope you love it), though SB’s shaken iced teas are pretty good too.

  3. I’m dyingggg to see cirque du soilel! My mom and one of my friends have seen it, and they said it was amazing. Sounds like a great weekend!

  4. Hey Sam, thank you so much for the image credit link!

Varekai is AMAZING, isn’t it? It was my first time seeing Cirque when we watched that show, too! What was your favorite act?

  5. It sounds like a great weekend and that trip to Cirque de Soleil is the perfect surprise! I’ve never been but my mom and I love going to shows so I’m sure it was a memorable time

  6. Wow what an awesome surprise for your mom! I saw the Cirque Du Soleil Eau show in Vegas and was blown away – so much talent! My weekend involved sushi too…nothing beats the salmon avocado combo! Fortunately there’s about 3 sushi places right next to my building, which means it might become a regular for lunch

    • I’ve heard that that one is incredible – it’s on my list for sure. And if I had sushi next to my apartment…well…I’d be pretty broke :-p

  7. The eggplant story – ouch!
My Mum recently started putting her green thumb to play..aaaand I may or may not, have been gently voicing how much simpler a quick run to the store for red chillies and what not would be, in contrast to the obscene amount (Mum likes to go full into new interests) spent on gardening “stuff”.
Oh come on..tell me the possibility of a chocolate drizzle over your ice-cream and tempura banana didn’t cross your mind at all!?!

    • haha I kept my little box to $20, so if it goes badly I won’t be out too much And that would have made it even better!

  8. The title of this post sums up my weekend perfectly! I’m SO excited summer is here… it was beautiful in the Rockies, too.

I’ve never been to a Cirque show, but I’d love to! Especially in Vegas. Dying to see O.

  9. I have nothing to say about plants other than keep them away from me if you want them to live And we are SO going to hit up a coffee joint in Utah, and I’m going to make you fall in love with coffee if it kills me. Also… I have no idea how you managed to keep that secret. I once bought a purse for my mom in the beginning of October so that I could give it to her for Christmas, and it was KILLING me. This is why I do all my shopping at the last minute

  11. My mum has the green thumb in our family, so her house always looks absolutely beautiful in spring and summer with flowers blooming everywhere. I, on the other hand, forget about flowers after a day, so they die quickly. Maybe next year, when we’re settled in our own place, I’ll try again? Haha we shall see. That is an awesome bday surprise for your mom! I have never seen a cirque, but it is definitely on my bucket list

    • both my parents have green thumbs – my dad does the veggie garden and my mom does flowers! So I’m hoping I inherited some of that

  12. Haha that’s too funny you asked your dad to plant eggplant only to discover you don’t like it! I think I’m right there with ya on wishing I had a green thumb, but I know nothing

And I’m going to Blend, too! So excited!

    • It is ridiculous how much a sunny day can change my mood! I’ve basically been in a non-stop good mood ever since winter finally went away, lol.

  14. Your pictures of sushi are really making me miss it big time! I can’t wait to start eating it again!

I love Cirque Du Soleil! Last year, Justin surprised me with front tickets and it was absolutely amazing! We loved it and I definitely want to go back! And, awesome job on surprising your mom! That’s definitely a hard secret to keep for so long!

  15. That sushi looks amazing – and all you can eat! I can only dream!

I would love to grow bits and bobs but I live in an apartment and don’t have a garden – oh no what a shame… (Please note sarcasm…!)

    • I started to like tequila a lot more once I started actually drinking it in mixed drinks rather than with lime wedges and salt

  17. I would say I have a black thumb, the thumb of death. I do not have good luck with plants, lol. The other thing is I hate gardening, like it is not relaxing to me at all. It’s going to take a lot of coaxing to get me to even plant flowers when I’m older haha!

Ohhhh and that marg. Yum. And so pretty!

  18. I never drank coffee at all until last summer when I started drinking iced coffees…. don’t start! I am now hooked on all types of coffee, and have to have it every day – sometimes twice a day!

  19. Um, I need to go to that sushi place – sashimi taco and tempura banana ice cream??? That sounds AMAZING.

  20. Ha…your b-day surprise reminded me of an ex-boyfriend who did a similar thing but with Prince tickets. He asked me to open the glove compartment on our way to the show (: Same boyfriend surprised me at work with half a watermelon (love!) and a candle. Too bad he was all “show” for the most part );

  21. I’m sooo not a gardener. I’m pretty sure I kill 3/4 of what I grow. Herbs and leafy greens are usually pretty successful though!

And what an awesome present for your mom – I bet she loved it!!
